Laura Callaghan draws badass bitches and beauty queens

The Wall by Laura Callaghan (left)- edit
Having found out about Laura Callaghan in a recent issue of Oh Comely (google it darlings), I quickly became a huge fan. Her bright and humorously accurate illustrations show young girls going about their daily lives, reading porn mags at work, lounging around in bed, and just generally not giving a shit. Each piece is filled with small and symbolic easter eggs; an issue of Playgirl, a carton of cigarettes, perhaps a bong. In 'The Wall' (above), a girl squats on her bed surrounded by idolistic (is that a word?) posters, symbols of faith, cigarettes and a bottle of vodka (and of course the guy lying next to her). It seems like all of these little easter eggs add up and blend in to the main image to create a sort of insight into the personalities of the girls that Laura draws. I guess this is the part I like most about Laura Callaghan's illustrations, the fact that there are no stereotyped characters.

I gotta say, 'Wiccans' is my absolute favourite of Laura's illustrations. It's much less subtle than the rest of her stuff, but SO AWESOME. I have gotta get my paws on some of these prints.
